U.S. administration announces $51M investment towards EV charging network

Thursday saw the announcement by the Biden-Harris administration of a $51 million Ride and Drive Electric funding opportunity through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to hasten the electrification of the country’s transport sector and encourage private sector investments in environmentally friendly transport.

By supporting the validation and testing of charging equipment, as well as creating new jobs and training opportunities, this grant will assist in improving the dependability of chargers. It will also help to enhance possibilities for underserved populations.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm said, “Thanks to President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, we are developing a robust and reliable EV charging network that is accessible in all communities and simple to use for all riders and drivers.” “We will meet consumer needs and achieve widespread electrification by rapidly modernising and electrifying key components of our transportation sector.”

Additionally, the government announced the formation of the National Charging Experience Consortium (ChargeX), to accelerate the development of immediate, useful solutions that prioritise a practical, reliable, fair, and user-friendly charging experience for every American, with chargers made in America.

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation will administer the Ride and Drive Electric program and has funded DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory to lead the National Charging Experience Consortium.

Every time a consumer uses public charging infrastructure, ChargeX aspires to assist the EV industry in being successful with first-time plug-ins. ChargeX will work with organisations to address concerns with accessibility and usability. Nearly 30 businesses and organisations have already pledged their support to the Consortium, which is striving to facilitate the construction of a dependable national charging network.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg states, “Under President Biden’s leadership, we are creating a new generation of good-paying jobs building the vehicles of the future and the infrastructure that supports them.”The EV revolution is already well under way, and this investment will ensure that every American can take advantage of its advantages and rely on a trustworthy EV charging network across the nation.
