U.S. consumer confidence rises in March

Despite an unexpected rise in consumer confidence in March, a survey released on Tuesday revealed that Americans are starting to feel a little uneasy about the labour situation.

The Conference Board reported that its consumer confidence index increased from 103.4 in February to 104.2 this month. The survey’s deadline was March 20, around 10 days after the demise of two local banks. The index was expected to be 101.0 by economists surveyed by Reuters.

According to Ataman Ozyildirim, senior director of Economics at The Conference Board, “the improvement reflects an improved outlook for consumers under 55 years of age and for households earning $50,000 and higher.”

The percentage of customers who said jobs were “plentiful” decreased, while the percentage who said they were “not so plentiful” increased. People now forecast more inflation over the next year, up from 6.2% last month to 6.3%.
