Google launches Pixel 8, smartwatch with new AI feature

Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) introduced its new Pixel 8 smartphones and a smartwatch, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its key consumer gadgets. The upgraded Pixel phones, known for their popularity among photography enthusiasts and those who prefer stock Android experiences, now feature the Tensor G3 mobile processor, bringing various machine learning and generative AI models directly to the devices.

These AI capabilities enhance photography, web page summarization, and spam call blocking. The high-end Pixel 8 Pro includes a temperature sensor and a Thermometer app that can measure body temperature pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration. The Pixel 8 starts at $699, while the Pixel 8 Pro starts at $999, $100 more than previous models. These devices are set to be available from October 12. Google’s focus on mobile AI could potentially drive higher market share, especially in the U.S.

The company also plans to integrate generative AI capabilities into its virtual assistant, allowing for advanced tasks such as trip planning and email management, along with follow-up questions. Additionally, Google introduced the Google Watch 2, an upgraded version of its smartwatch, priced starting at $349. The new watch features a digital crown and advanced health tracking functions powered by AI.
