The Ethereum network is gearing up for a significant upgrade known as the Prague upgrade or Pectra upgrade. This update has generated considerable interest within the Ethereum community as it promises substantial improvements to the platform. The Prague upgrade is currently undergoing testing on various testnets, including Goerli, Sepolia, and Holesky, with scheduled rollouts on Jan. 17, Jan. 30, and Feb. 7, 2024, respectively. These testnets serve as crucial environments for developers to fine-tune the upgrade before it goes live on the main network.

One notable point of discussion within the Ethereum development community revolves around the prioritization of Verkle trees, a sophisticated data structure designed to enhance storage and information access on the Ethereum network. There is an ongoing debate among developers regarding whether Verkle trees should be the primary focus or if a smaller feature fork should be pursued alongside Verkle tree development.

The argument for concentrating solely on Verkle trees is rooted in their complexity and the considerable time required for effective implementation. If Verkle trees take precedence, it might mean that no new features for the execution layer (EL) could be introduced for a period of 12 to 24 months, or potentially longer.
